Uitdaging
Weersomstandigheden verschillen wereldwijd van plaats tot plaats en van tijd tot tijd. Ons klimaat heeft echter in korte tijd nog nooit zulke snelle en drastische veranderingen meegemaakt als in de afgelopen decennia. Onze uitdaging ligt in het begrijpen van de negatieve en positieve aspecten van klimaatverandering en in het bepalen van de best mogelijke manier om op deze veranderingen te reageren en ons aan te passen.
Klimaatverandering kan de hydrologische cyclus op veel manieren veranderen. De temporele en ruimtelijke patronen van regenval zullen veranderen met gevolgen voor, oppervlakte- en grondwaterberging, waterbehoeften voor de landbouw, rivierafvoeren, erosie en naar alle waarschijnlijkheid een grotere kans op extremen – droogtes en overstromingen – in verschillende delen van de wereld. De temperaturen zullen stijgen, waardoor de behoefte aan water voor de voedselproductie zal toenemen, met als gevolg dat de waterbronnen, die nu al onder druk staan, nog verder onder druk komen te staan. Irrigatie, regengevoede landbouw, waterkracht, watervoorziening en sanitaire voorzieningen zullen allemaal worden beïnvloed, wat zal leiden tot veranderingen voor de menselijke gezondheid, welvaart en veiligheid. Aan de vraagzijde zal, naarmate de bevolking groeit en naarmate hun inkomen stijgt, hun vraag naar watervoorraden veranderen, zowel in de ruimte als in de tijd.
Het netto-effect van deze veranderingen aan de vraag- en aanbodzijde zal grote uitdagingen opleveren voor het toekomstige beheer van watervoorraden voor de ontwikkeling van mens en ecosysteem. Vraagbeheer, dat gericht is op het reguleren van duurzaam watergebruik door middel van maatregelen zoals het bevorderen waterbesparende technieken voor de voedselproductie, zal steeds belangrijker worden in gebieden waar de relatieve schaarste en concurrentie tussen sectoren toeneemt. Het leveren van voldoende water komt onder druk te staan wanneer de jaarlijkse beschikbaarheid aanzienlijk zal veranderen en in die delen van de wereld waar de bevolking kwetsbaarder is. Wanneer de vraag naar water toeneemt wordt over het algemeen geprobeerd om de watervoorziening te vergroten, worden opslagcapaciteit vergroot, wordt er water uit oppervlaktewater onttrokken, wordt regenwater opgevangen en wordt waterbesparing gestimuleerd.
FutureWater-aanpak
FutureWater ontwikkelt en past innovatieve methoden en instrumenten toe voor advies over klimaatverandering en watervoorraden. Een van de belangrijkste sterke punten van FutureWater is dat voor elk project een unieke (bestaande of nieuwe) aanpak worden toegepast en indien nodig ontwikkeld. Vooral voor watergerelateerde klimaatverandering is zo’n doelgerichtheid essentieel. We kijken naar de meest relevante klimaatparameters: b.v. regenval, temperatuur, zeespiegelstijging, water voor landbouw en voor elke parameter wordt de ruimtelijke en temporele dimensie en relevantie geëvalueerd.
FutureWater heeft toegang tot een breed scala aan klimaatgegevens, tools en experts. Experts van FutureWater hebben interne datasets ontwikkeld, maar ook tools en methoden om toegang te krijgen tot andere externe data. Typische voorbeelden zijn scriptingtools om klimaatgegevens van de verschillende CMIP-producten (Climate Model Intercomparing Project) en NASA-NEX-GDDP (Nasa Earth Exchange Global Daily Downscaled Projections) te openen, te bewerken en te analyseren.
FutureWater is betrokken bij een breed scala aan klimaatverandering gerelateerde projecten in de watersector, waarbij mitigatie en aanpassing aan klimaatverandering belangrijke thema’s zijn. De experts van FutureWater hebben zelfs geholpen bij het ontwikkelen van een GCF-voorstel (Green Climate Fund). We voeren veel projecten uit waarbij de impact en aanpassing van klimaatverandering op bestaande en op toekomstige projecten centraal staat voor klanten zoals de Wereldbank, de Aziatische Ontwikkelingsbank, nationale en lokale overheden, stroomgebiedorganisaties, wetenschappelijke instellingen, universiteiten en onderzoeksorganisaties.
